Under the Tree was recorded in 1971 to document the end of Shide & Acorn, who were on the verge of splitting. Such proximity to group-s immolation may explain the "tired" sound of 2 or 3 songs. The rest of the LP typifies the degenerate hippie sensibilities of the late '60s (when the material was written) - here the listener is in a world where Tolkien becomes a literary genius and godfather to the hippie-psyche. Mellow to the point of somnambulism, unthreatening peace and love lyricism, wistful child-of-the-stars female vocals, marijuana-worshipping male vocals. Sitars, anachronistic stringed instruments, belss - pseudo-mystical tosh, elves, cosmic wanderings - all here. Typically insidious, the thinly veiled christianity of Tolkien - as patronisingly duff as the average American situation comedy - had an ironically profound influence on 'subversive' youth. What music would have resulted had T. H. White been chosen as guru? or the superbly dark wit of Fritz Leiber's "Fafhrd & Grey Mouser" tale? Better still, leaving the realms of generic fiction, Plato or the divine Marcus - and a world free of music altogether.
